Nikah Documents: What to Prepare in Malaysia

Paperwork is the part nobody photographs — and the part that can delay everything. Here's the usual checklist, with the one rule that matters: requirements differ by state.

The usual steps and documents

  1. Kursus kahwin — both parties attend (or complete) the pre-marriage course; keep the certificate safe. It's typically valid for a limited period, so check before booking it too early.
  2. HIV screening / medical check — required in most states before nikah; done at a clinic or government hospital. Ask your district religious office which is accepted.
  3. Nikah application at the district religious office (pejabat agama daerah / JAWI / JAIS etc. depending on state) — usually submitted weeks before the date.
  4. IC copies of both parties, and typically of the wali (guardian) and two witnesses.
  5. Passport photos — ask the office for the required size and quantity (it differs).
  6. Kariah / address confirmation — some states require the bride's kariah (parish area) confirmation from the local mosque office.
  7. Wali and witnesses confirmed — the wali's attendance (or authorised representation) is a pillar of the akad; confirm early, especially if the wali lives far away.
  8. Mas kahwin and its documentation — agreed and recorded in the application.
